National Training Co-ordinator Belgium
Karolien has been working in the poultry sector for 3.5 years. She first worked as a counselor in an organization of poultry producers, and switched jobs to the ILVO since May 2018. ILVO, the Flanders research institute for agriculture, fisheries and food performs multidisciplinary, innovative and independent research aimed at economically, ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and fisheries. The institute exists out of four units: Animal Sciences, Social Sciences, Plant Sciences and Technology & Food Sciences. The Animal Sciences unit includes groups focusing on cattle, pig and small livestock husbandry, and animal welfare. The Animal Sciences Unit is experienced in (amongst other) feed, emission and welfare research. ILVO has its own feed mill, which is a great advantage in performing feed trials.
Currently, Karolien is responsible at the ILVO and leading the Poultry Information Center. Her most important goal is providing information and results from the poultry research to the poultry sector (and vice versa).
In 2017, there were 9,418,433 laying hens in Belgium with diverse types of housing systems:
- 39.3% enriched cages
- 42.6% barn
